Lenousel
Today is the day..., thought Lenousel. He climbed out of his burrow made out of the roots of the great oak tree in the Forest. There was an aisle in front of him created from the rabbits that once were his family and neighbors. But not anymore since, today, Lenousel was being banished from his village because he had different beliefs. He hadn't believed that the rabbit God, Haelir, created the rabbits, as everyone else thought, but that some other force had created these lands. For this, they were banishing him from his only home. He glanced sideways as he was walking down the aisle of rabbits. A few looked sad, some looked scared, but most, they looked triumphant at their deed. Lenousel finally saw the end of the aisle where the leader of the community was standing. Then Lenousel suddenly heard a soft whisper in his ear.
"Looks like looney Lenousel is leaving as a loser...." It was Nesken, Lenousel's archenemy and the one who had suggested to ban him in the first place. Lenousel grimaced as he saw Nesken join back into the aisle. Finally he was at the end. There stood Lynchwich, leader of the village. Frowning, he cleared his throat and spoke.
"I hereby claim that Lenousel of Augalstan has been banished from the Forest. May he never step foot into our lands again," Lynchwich stepped aside, but Lenousel didn't move. He stared out, his eyes widening in fear. Lynchwich spoke again, but in a low hiss, "You must go now, traitor. Go now, and never darken our lives again."
Lenousel took a deep breath and stepped forward. Only after taking several more steps, he stumbled as something crashed into him. He whipped around and saw it was Henalir, his beloved. Tears were running down her sad face.
Lenousel wiped the tears off of her face with his paw and whispered, "Don't cry, Henalir. Please don't cry."
"But--but you're leaving and I won't ever see you again! Oh, I love you, Lenousel. Don't go!" pleaded Henalir, her voice cracking.
"But I have no choice. I must go," said Lenousel.
"Then I'll come with you."
"Oh no, fair Henalir, I would never let you do that. You belong here," Lenousel said, motioning to the Forest. He then said, "I was starting to think that you were too ashamed to say 'So long' to an outlaw like me," with a grin.
"Don't say that. I would never do such a thing, Lenousel. I'll probably die of sorrowness if you leave," Henalir breathed.
Lenousel embraced her. Henalir's fur was as soft as moss in the spring time. He kissed the top of her head, turned around, and continued on his way. After a moment he paused and turned back to face Henalir again and said, "This may not be 'Good bye', Henalir of Sebinor. We might meet again later in our lives."
He turned on his heel toward the edge of the Forest. Rain began to fall. Droplets that were glass fell upon Lenousel, paining him every time he was hit.
